Description
Beta-1 globulin is one of the protein fractions identified on a protein electrophoresis test, made up largely of transferrin, the protein that transports iron through your bloodstream. Changes in this fraction can relate to iron status — for example, transferrin (and therefore beta-1 globulin) tends to rise with iron deficiency, as the body produces more transporter protein when iron stores run low. It can also be affected by certain liver and kidney conditions that alter protein production or loss. As with the other electrophoresis fractions, beta-1 globulin is interpreted as part of the overall protein pattern rather than as a standalone result.

Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) is an analytical technique that provides separation of serum protein into six fractions: Albumin, Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2, and Gamma. Interpretation of elevation, decreased, or visual change in different fractions can be used as a diagnostic aid for a variety of different disease states and protein abnormalities, including monoclonal gammopathies (MG).
