Description
Alpha-1 globulin is one of the protein fractions separated out in a protein electrophoresis test, and it's made up mostly of alpha-1 antitrypsin, a protein that protects your lungs and other tissues from damage by certain enzymes. A low alpha-1 globulin level can be an early clue pointing toward alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic condition that raises the risk of lung and liver disease. Elevated levels, on the other hand, are a nonspecific finding that can occur with acute inflammation, since alpha-1 antitrypsin behaves as an 'acute phase' protein that rises during the body's inflammatory response. This fraction is usually reviewed as part of the full electrophoresis pattern rather than in isolation.
