Anti-Jo-1 details
Description
Anti-Jo-1 is an autoantibody that targets an enzyme involved in protein synthesis, and it's the most common of a group of antibodies called anti-synthetase antibodies. Its presence is strongly associated with antisynthetase syndrome, an autoimmune condition that typically involves some combination of muscle inflammation (myositis, including polymyositis and dermatomyositis), interstitial lung disease, joint inflammation, and characteristic skin changes on the hands ('mechanic's hands'). Testing for anti-Jo-1 is typically prompted by symptoms like muscle weakness, unexplained shortness of breath, or joint pain, and a positive result helps guide further evaluation, including lung imaging and pulmonary function testing, since lung involvement is often the most serious complication.
