Description
SS-A (Ro) antibodies are autoantibodies associated most strongly with Sjögren's syndrome (an autoimmune condition causing dry eyes and dry mouth) and also seen in lupus. They carry particular clinical relevance during pregnancy: if present in a pregnant woman, these antibodies can cross the placenta and, in rare cases, cause a heart rhythm problem in the developing baby (congenital heart block) or a temporary skin rash in the newborn, so pregnancies in SS-A-positive women are sometimes monitored more closely with specialized fetal heart rhythm screening.
