Description
Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA is the primary, first-line antibody test used to screen for celiac disease, an autoimmune reaction to gluten that damages the lining of the small intestine. It's highly sensitive and specific for celiac disease in people with normal IgA levels, and a significantly elevated result, especially combined with typical symptoms (digestive issues, fatigue, or nutrient deficiencies), strongly supports the diagnosis, which is generally then confirmed with a small intestine biopsy. Accurate results depend on continuing to eat gluten leading up to testing, since a gluten-free diet can cause antibody levels to normalize even if celiac disease is present.
