Description
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is one of your body's main antibody classes, concentrated especially in mucous membranes — the lining of your gut, respiratory tract, and other surfaces exposed to the outside world — where it serves as a first line of immune defense. Low IgA is one of the most common inherited immune deficiencies, and while many people with it have no symptoms, some experience recurrent infections or increased risk of certain autoimmune conditions. Total IgA is also routinely checked before celiac disease antibody testing (like tTG-IgA), since IgA deficiency can cause those tests to give a false-negative result.

Celiac disease is characterized by the presence of Transglutaminase, Gliadin, and Reticulin Antibodies. Such patients display a hypersensitivity to gluten (wheat) in their diet. The antibody is undetectable when patients with hypersensitivity are placed on gluten-free diets. Antibody IgA is more specific and IgG is more sensitive to Celiac disease.
