Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a signaling protein that promotes the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), a normal process important for wound healing and tissue repair, but one that can also be co-opted by tumors to supply themselves with blood, and become dysregulated in certain eye and inflammatory conditions. VEGF is studied in cancer (where several cancer treatments specifically target VEGF to cut off a tumor's blood supply), certain eye diseases involving abnormal blood vessel growth (like macular degeneration), and various chronic inflammatory conditions, though blood VEGF testing is used mainly in research and specialized clinical contexts rather than as routine screening.
