Description

This test is used to detect infections caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is known for causing infectious mononucleosis, often referred to as mono. While mono is generally a mild illness in children and young adults, EBV can also lead to more serious conditions, including certain types of tumors.

What patients is this test right for?

This test is particularly useful for doctors when they suspect someone has mono or is experiencing symptoms related to EBV infections. It measures different types of antibodies produced in response to EBV:

VCA-IgM: Appears early in the infection and fades within 1 to 3 months.
VCA-IgG: Also appears early but remains in the body for life.
EBNA IgG: Develops later and stays for life, indicating past infection and recovery.
