Insulin Autoantibody details
Description
Insulin autoantibodies are autoantibodies that target insulin itself, one of several markers (along with GAD-65 and IA-2 antibodies) used together to help diagnose type 1 diabetes and confirm that it's driven by an autoimmune attack on the pancreas, rather than type 2 diabetes. These antibodies can sometimes appear years before diabetes symptoms actually develop, which is part of why autoantibody panels are also used in research settings to study diabetes risk in relatives of people with type 1 diabetes.

This test detects the presence of insulin antibodies in the blood. It is particularly useful in patients who have not yet been treated with insulin but present with symptoms suggestive of diabetes or have a family history of the condition. This test aids in differentiating between type 1 diabetes mellitus (autoimmune), type 2 diabetes mellitus, and atypical forms like latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). It is also valuable in assessing the risk of future type 1 diabetes and in diagnosing rare autoimmune hypoglycemic syndromes.
