Description
IA-2 (insulinoma-associated antigen 2) antibodies are autoantibodies that target a protein found in insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Along with GAD-65 antibodies and others, IA-2 antibodies are used as part of a panel to help diagnose type 1 diabetes and distinguish it from type 2, since their presence reflects an autoimmune process attacking the pancreas. Testing multiple autoantibodies together (rather than just one) improves the overall accuracy of identifying autoimmune diabetes.
