Description
Gastrin is a hormone produced mainly in the stomach that stimulates the release of stomach acid to aid digestion. Elevated gastrin can occur with conditions that block normal acid-related feedback, most notably Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition caused by a gastrin-producing tumor that leads to severe acid overproduction and recurrent ulcers, and is also commonly elevated simply from taking acid-suppressing medications (like proton pump inhibitors), which remove the normal feedback signal that would otherwise keep gastrin in check. Because of this medication effect, gastrin testing sometimes requires stopping certain acid-reducing drugs beforehand for an accurate result.
