Copper details

Description

Copper is an essential trace mineral involved in energy production, iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and antioxidant defense, and this test measures the copper circulating in your blood. Low copper can occur with malabsorption conditions, certain genetic disorders, excessive zinc intake (which interferes with copper absorption), or after some bariatric surgeries, and can cause anemia and neurological symptoms if significant. High copper is less common from diet alone and can relate to conditions like Wilson's disease (though paradoxically free, unbound copper is what's toxic in Wilson's disease, while total measured copper can sometimes be low), certain liver diseases, or, rarely, excess supplementation.

Copper (Plasma)

$19.49

Copper Test - Copper is a vital mineral that plays a key role in our body by helping many enzymes work properly. It's important for detecting conditions like Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, and Indian childhood cirrhosis, where copper balance is off. Copper levels can go up during certain times, like when you're sick or in the last part of pregnancy. They can go down due to kidney problems, not absorbing nutrients well, or not getting enough nutrients. This test is also used to check on the health of patients, especially babies born early, who are getting extra nutrition. Doctors often look at copper test results along with another test called ceruloplasmin to get the full picture.

Copper is a crucial mineral that helps many of our enzymes work properly. This test checks copper levels in the body, which can tell us a lot about certain health conditions. It's especially important for diagnosing diseases like Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, and Indian childhood cirrhosis. Copper levels can go up during certain times, like when you're sick or in the last part of pregnancy. They can go down if you have kidney problems, trouble absorbing nutrients, or aren't getting enough nutrition. This test is also used to keep an eye on copper levels in people, especially babies born too early, who are getting extra nutrition. Providers often look at copper and ceruloplasmin levels together to get the full picture.
