Copper RBC details
Description
This test measures copper stored inside red blood cells rather than freely circulating in your blood serum, which some practitioners consider a more accurate reflection of your body's longer-term copper status, since serum copper can be more variable and influenced by recent intake and inflammation. It's used similarly to serum copper testing โ to help evaluate for copper deficiency or, less commonly, excess โ but is a less standardized and less commonly used test in mainstream clinical practice compared to standard serum copper.

Copper is a crucial mineral that helps many of our enzymes work properly. This test checks copper levels in the body, which can tell us about certain health conditions like Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, primary biliary cirrhosis, and Indian childhood cirrhosis. It's also used to see how the body reacts to inflammation or to check if there's a problem with how the body absorbs nutrients. This test is particularly important for monitoring the health of preterm newborns who are receiving extra nutrition.
