Calcitriol (1,25 di-OH Vitamin D) details
Description
Calcitriol is the active, hormone form of vitamin D โ the form that actually does the work of helping your body absorb calcium from food and regulate calcium levels, after your kidneys convert inactive vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) into this active form. Unlike standard 25-OH vitamin D testing, which reflects your overall vitamin D stores, calcitriol testing is used less often and mainly in specific situations: evaluating certain calcium disorders, kidney disease (since the kidneys are needed to make calcitriol), sarcoidosis or other granulomatous diseases that can produce calcitriol abnormally, and some rare genetic conditions affecting vitamin D metabolism. For routine vitamin D status, standard 25-OH vitamin D testing is the appropriate test, not this one.
