Vitamin C details

Description

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant vitamin important for immune function, wound healing, and collagen production (essential for skin, blood vessels, and connective tissue), and it also helps improve the absorption of non-heme iron (the type found in plant foods) from your diet. Significant deficiency, causing scurvy, is now rare in developed countries but can still occur with very restrictive diets, limited access to fresh produce, certain malabsorption conditions, or heavy smoking (which increases the body's vitamin C needs). This test is used to assess vitamin C status when deficiency is clinically suspected.
