Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a hormone that plays roles in regulating gut motility, digestive secretions, and blood vessel dilation. Elevated VIP levels are the hallmark of a rare, hormone-secreting tumor called a VIPoma, usually arising from the pancreas, which causes a distinctive pattern of severe, watery diarrhea, low potassium, and other metabolic disturbances. This test is used specifically to evaluate for this rare tumor when someone presents with this characteristic, difficult-to-explain symptom pattern.
