Description
This antibody indicates immunity to varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the virus responsible for chickenpox and, later in life through reactivation, shingles — whether that immunity comes from a past chickenpox infection or from vaccination. A positive result generally confirms protection against a new chickenpox infection. It's commonly checked to confirm immunity status, for example in healthcare workers, before certain immunosuppressive treatments, or when vaccination history is uncertain.

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) causes chicken pox and when reactivated, potentially decades later, causes shingles. Twenty percent of adults will develop shingles, a rash or blister of the skin that may cause severe pain. Varicella-Zoster IgG, EIA reliably measures immunity due to previous infection, but is unsuitable for detection of post-vaccination immune status.
