Tryptase details
Description
Tryptase is an enzyme released by mast cells, immune cells involved in allergic reactions. This test is used mainly in two contexts: to help confirm that a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) has occurred, since tryptase spikes shortly after such a reaction and can support the diagnosis when drawn within a few hours of the event; and, when persistently elevated at baseline (outside of any acute reaction), to help evaluate for a mast cell disorder, a group of conditions in which mast cells are abnormally increased or overactive, sometimes causing recurrent, unpredictable allergic-type symptoms.
