Description
This antibody indicates past exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, a common parasite often acquired through contact with cat feces or undercooked meat, and usually causing no symptoms or only mild, flu-like illness in healthy people. Once infected, the parasite typically remains dormant in the body for life without causing further problems. Testing matters most during pregnancy, since a new (rather than past) infection can potentially affect fetal development, and in people with significantly weakened immune systems, where the dormant parasite can reactivate and cause serious illness.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Approximately 23% of the immunocompetent population are asymptomatic carriers of the parasite. The combination of high titers of IgG and IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii is consistent with infection in the last three months. High titers of IgG and low to medium titers of IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii are consistent with infection in the last three to six months.
