Description
Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) is an autoantibody that mimics the action of TSH, binding to and activating the same receptor on thyroid cells, which causes the thyroid to overproduce hormone independent of normal pituitary control. Its presence is a key, fairly specific marker for diagnosing Graves' disease, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, and TSI levels are also sometimes used to help predict the likely course of Graves' disease and to assess risk for Graves'-related eye disease, since higher levels are associated with more active disease.
