Tg details
Description
Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a protein produced exclusively by thyroid tissue, and its main clinical use is as a tumor marker in people who've already been treated for thyroid cancer (typically with surgical removal of the thyroid, sometimes combined with radioactive iodine treatment). Since normal thyroid tissue is the only source of thyroglobulin, a detectable or rising level after treatment can signal that some thyroid tissue โ potentially cancer recurrence โ remains or has returned, making it a key tool for post-treatment monitoring. It isn't useful as a general thyroid cancer screening test, since benign thyroid conditions also raise thyroglobulin.
