Description
Total T3 measures triiodothyronine (T3), one of your two main thyroid hormones, including both the bound (inactive) and unbound (active) portions together. It's used in thyroid function evaluation, particularly useful for diagnosing T3 thyrotoxicosis (a less common form of hyperthyroidism where T3 is elevated even when T4 looks normal) and for assessing hyperthyroidism severity. Because total T3 is affected by binding protein levels (which can shift with pregnancy, liver disease, or certain medications), free T3 is often considered a more precise measurement when binding protein levels might be abnormal.
