Serotonin details

Description

Serotonin is best known as a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, but the vast majority of your body's serotonin is actually produced and used in the gut, not the brain, and blood serotonin levels don't meaningfully reflect brain serotonin activity or mood. Clinically, blood serotonin testing is used mainly to help evaluate carcinoid tumors, a rare type of neuroendocrine tumor that can overproduce serotonin and cause a distinctive set of symptoms (flushing, diarrhea, wheezing) known as carcinoid syndrome โ€” not as a test for depression, anxiety, or other mood conditions.
