Description
This antibody indicates a recent or current rubella infection. Because rubella infection during pregnancy — especially in the first trimester — carries a significant risk of serious birth defects for the developing baby, IgM testing is used to help confirm an active or very recent infection when rubella is suspected, particularly if a pregnant woman was exposed to someone with the illness or develops symptoms suggestive of rubella.
