Description
This antibody indicates a recent or currently active parvovirus B19 infection — the virus responsible for fifth disease, a common childhood illness causing a facial rash, and sometimes joint pain in adults. IgM antibodies appear early in infection, making this test useful for confirming a recent case, which is particularly relevant during pregnancy, since a new infection can, in rare cases, affect the developing baby and may warrant closer monitoring.
