Description
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is produced by four small parathyroid glands located near your thyroid, and it plays the central role in regulating your blood calcium levels — raising calcium when it's low by pulling it from bone, increasing absorption in the gut, and reducing loss through the kidneys. Elevated PTH with high calcium suggests overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism, often from a benign growth on one of the glands); elevated PTH with low or normal calcium is more often a secondary response to vitamin D deficiency or kidney disease. Low PTH typically causes low calcium and can result from parathyroid gland damage (including after certain neck surgeries) or, rarely, other causes.
