Description
NT-proBNP is a hormone-related substance released by your heart muscle when it's under increased strain or stress, most commonly from heart failure, where the heart struggles to pump blood as effectively as it should. It's one of the primary blood tests used to help diagnose heart failure in someone with symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling, and to help distinguish a cardiac cause of these symptoms from other causes (like lung disease). Levels are also used to help monitor heart failure severity and treatment response over time, with higher levels generally reflecting greater cardiac strain.
