Description
Myoglobin is a protein found in muscle tissue, including heart muscle, that helps store and transport oxygen within muscle cells, and it's released into the bloodstream quickly — often within just 1-2 hours — whenever muscle tissue, including the heart, is damaged. Because it rises so quickly, myoglobin was historically used as an early marker after a suspected heart attack, though it isn't specific to the heart, since any significant skeletal muscle injury also raises it. It's largely been replaced in cardiac evaluation by more specific troponin testing, though it's still occasionally used to help assess significant muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).
