Description
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme released by certain white blood cells (neutrophils) during their normal role in fighting infection and inflammation. Beyond its role in immune defense, MPO has also been studied as a marker of cardiovascular risk, since it's thought to play a role in oxidizing LDL cholesterol and destabilizing artery plaque, potentially making it a marker of plaque vulnerability to rupture — the event that typically triggers a heart attack. It's used in some specialized cardiovascular risk assessments alongside more standard markers.
