Description
Monomeric prolactin is the normal, fully active, single-molecule form of prolactin — as opposed to macroprolactin, a larger and less biologically active form that can also show up in a standard prolactin test. Measuring monomeric prolactin specifically helps clarify whether an elevated total prolactin result is driven by genuinely active hormone (which would warrant further evaluation for causes like a pituitary tumor or certain medications) or largely by the less clinically significant macroprolactin form.
