Lead details

Description

This test measures lead levels in your blood, used to assess exposure to this toxic heavy metal, which has no known safe level in the body, especially for children, whose developing nervous systems are particularly vulnerable. Common exposure sources include old lead paint (especially in homes built before 1978), contaminated soil or water (from old pipes), certain imported goods, and some occupational exposures. Elevated lead can affect the nervous system, kidneys, and blood, and in children specifically, even relatively low levels have been linked to developmental and learning effects, which is why lead screening is routine in pediatric care.
