Iodine details

Description

Iodine is an essential trace mineral your thyroid gland needs as a raw material to produce thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), and both too little and too much iodine can disrupt normal thyroid function. Iodine deficiency, historically a major cause of goiter and hypothyroidism worldwide, is less common in countries with iodized salt but can still occur, particularly with very restrictive diets. Excess iodine intake (from supplements, certain medications, or contrast dye used in some imaging scans) can also disrupt thyroid function, especially in people with underlying thyroid conditions, so iodine testing is sometimes used to evaluate unexplained thyroid dysfunction.
