Description
The International Normalized Ratio (INR) is a standardized way of expressing prothrombin time (PT), your blood's clotting speed through one of its main pathways, adjusted using a formula so that results are comparable across different labs and testing methods worldwide. INR is used mainly to monitor and adjust dosing for people taking the blood thinner warfarin, where the goal is usually to keep the INR within a specific target range — high enough to reduce clotting risk, but not so high that bleeding risk becomes dangerous. It's also used more broadly to help evaluate liver function and bleeding disorders, since the liver makes several of the clotting factors this test depends on.
