Description
Hepatitis B surface antigen is a protein found on the outer coat of the hepatitis B virus itself, and its presence in your blood directly indicates an active, current hepatitis B infection — whether acute (recent) or chronic (long-term, lasting more than six months). It's the primary screening test for hepatitis B infection, and a positive result prompts further testing (including core antibody IgM to check if it's a new infection, and viral load testing) to characterize the infection and guide whether treatment or monitoring is needed.
