Description
Growth hormone (GH) is produced by the pituitary gland and drives growth during childhood and adolescence, while continuing to play roles in metabolism, muscle and bone maintenance, and tissue repair throughout adulthood. Because GH is released in pulses and fluctuates significantly throughout the day, a single random level is often not very informative on its own — evaluating suspected GH excess (acromegaly/gigantism) or deficiency usually requires more specialized dynamic testing (like a glucose suppression test for excess, or a stimulation test for deficiency) or measuring IGF-1, which reflects average GH activity over time more reliably than a single GH level.
