This test measures the actual concentration of fibrinogen protein present in your blood, as distinct from a functional fibrinogen test, which measures how well that fibrinogen actually works in forming a clot. Comparing antigen (amount) to functional (activity) results can help distinguish a true fibrinogen deficiency (low in both) from a functional problem where enough fibrinogen protein is present but it doesn't work normally (normal antigen, low function) — a distinction that matters for correctly diagnosing certain inherited fibrinogen disorders.
