This is a genetic (DNA) test for the Factor V Leiden mutation, the single most common inherited cause of an increased tendency to form abnormal blood clots (thrombophilia). People who carry one copy of this mutation have a moderately increased clotting risk, while those with two copies (one from each parent) have a substantially higher risk; the mutation itself doesn't change over your lifetime once inherited. It's typically ordered after an unexplained blood clot, particularly at a young age, with recurrent clots, or with a family history of clotting problems, often alongside other thrombophilia tests like prothrombin gene mutation and protein C/S testing.
