Description
Factor V is a protein that plays a key role in the middle of the blood clotting cascade, working together with other clotting factors to help form a stable clot. This test measures how well Factor V is functioning, and low activity — from an inherited deficiency, liver disease, or as part of disseminated intravascular coagulation (a serious clotting/bleeding disorder) — can contribute to abnormal bleeding. It's typically ordered as part of a broader clotting factor evaluation when someone has unexplained bleeding or an abnormal PT/aPTT result that needs further investigation to pinpoint the specific factor involved.
