Description
The endomysial antibody (EMA) IgA test looks for antibodies that target a structure in connective tissue, and it's considered one of the most specific tests available for confirming celiac disease — a positive result is highly likely to reflect true celiac disease rather than a false positive. It's typically used to confirm a celiac diagnosis when tissue transglutaminase (tTG) results are positive but not entirely clear-cut, since EMA testing, while very specific, is more labor-intensive and subjective to interpret than tTG, which is why tTG remains the standard first-line screening test.
