Description
Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid medication, and this test measures its level in your blood, most often as part of a dexamethasone suppression test used to evaluate adrenal function. In this test, a dose of dexamethasone is given and cortisol is checked afterward — in a normally functioning system, dexamethasone should suppress cortisol production, and a failure to suppress can support a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome (excess cortisol). Measuring the actual dexamethasone level helps confirm that the medication was properly absorbed and present at testing time, ruling out a false result caused by poor absorption or a missed dose.
