Description
The direct Coombs test (direct antiglobulin test) checks whether antibodies or complement proteins are attached directly to the surface of your own red blood cells, which can mark those cells for premature destruction by your immune system. A positive result supports a diagnosis of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, where the body mistakenly attacks its own red blood cells, or can indicate a transfusion reaction, where the immune system is reacting to transfused blood cells, or, in newborns, hemolytic disease of the newborn caused by maternal antibodies. It's typically ordered when unexplained anemia or signs of red blood cell destruction (like jaundice or dark urine) are present.
