Description
Clozapine is an antipsychotic medication used mainly for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, and this test measures its concentration in your blood to help guide safe and effective dosing. Clozapine has a narrow therapeutic range and a well-known risk of serious side effects (including a potentially dangerous drop in white blood cells, called agranulocytosis, which requires separate regular blood count monitoring), so blood level testing helps ensure a person is getting an effective dose without unnecessary risk from excessive levels. Levels can also be affected by smoking status, other medications, and individual differences in how a person metabolizes the drug, which is why periodic level checks are a standard part of monitoring.
