Description
Ceruloplasmin is the main protein that carries copper through your bloodstream, produced by the liver. Low ceruloplasmin — especially combined with low blood copper and elevated urine copper — is a key finding used to help diagnose Wilson's disease, a genetic disorder in which copper builds up abnormally in the liver, brain, and other organs, potentially causing serious liver and neurological damage if untreated. Ceruloplasmin can also rise as part of the body's general inflammatory response (it behaves as an 'acute phase' protein), so mild elevations aren't specific to any single condition. It's typically checked alongside serum copper and, when Wilson's disease is suspected, additional tests like a slit-lamp eye exam and sometimes genetic testing.
