Description
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a general marker of inflammation produced by the liver in response to inflammatory signals anywhere in the body, and it can rise significantly — sometimes within just a few hours — in response to infections, injuries, surgery, and flares of inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. Because it's a nonspecific marker (meaning it doesn't point to a particular cause), an elevated CRP simply indicates that inflammation is present somewhere in the body, and further evaluation based on symptoms is usually needed to identify the source. It's commonly used to help monitor disease activity and treatment response in inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease, and to help evaluate for infection.
