Description
Bile acids are compounds made by the liver from cholesterol and released into the digestive tract to help you absorb dietary fat; after digestion, most are reabsorbed and recycled back to the liver. This test measures total bile acids in your blood, and elevated levels can indicate that your liver isn't clearing and recycling bile acids properly — a sign of impaired liver function or blocked bile flow (cholestasis). It's a particularly useful marker during pregnancy for detecting intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, a condition that causes intense itching and requires monitoring due to potential risks to the baby. Outside of pregnancy, it can be used alongside other liver tests to evaluate liver and bile duct function.
