Arsenic details
Description
This test measures the level of arsenic, a toxic heavy metal, in your blood or urine, and is used to evaluate possible exposure. Arsenic exposure most commonly comes from contaminated well water, certain seafood (which contains a less toxic organic form), some pesticides, and occupational or environmental sources. Acute high-dose exposure can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, while chronic lower-level exposure is linked over time to skin changes, nerve damage, and increased risk of certain cancers and cardiovascular disease. Because seafood consumption can temporarily raise levels without reflecting a genuine toxic exposure, testing (especially urine arsenic) is sometimes done after a period of avoiding seafood, or with 'speciation' testing that distinguishes the more concerning inorganic arsenic from harmless organic forms.
