Description
Antistreptolysin O (ASO) antibodies form in response to a toxin (streptolysin O) released by group A Streptococcus bacteria, so a rising or elevated ASO level indicates a recent strep infection, typically strep throat. It's used mainly to help confirm a preceding strep infection in someone with symptoms suggestive of rheumatic fever (which can affect the heart, joints, skin, and brain) or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (kidney inflammation), both of which are delayed immune complications rather than direct infections. ASO levels typically rise 1-3 weeks after infection and peak around 3-5 weeks, so a single result is sometimes less informative than tracking levels over time. It's often paired with anti-DNase B testing to improve detection, since some strep infections trigger one antibody more than the other.
