Description
Androstenedione is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and, in smaller amounts, the ovaries or testes, serving as a direct precursor that your body converts into both testosterone and estrogen. It's tested mainly to evaluate symptoms of excess androgen (male hormone) activity, such as irregular periods, acne, or unwanted hair growth in women, and can help identify adrenal gland disorders, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and, rarely, adrenal or ovarian tumors. Elevated levels are often assessed together with other androgens like DHEA-S and testosterone to help pinpoint whether the source is the adrenal glands or the ovaries/testes. Levels also naturally vary with age, puberty stage, and menstrual cycle timing in women.
