Description
Aldolase is an enzyme involved in breaking down glucose for energy, found in particularly high concentrations in skeletal muscle, as well as the liver and red blood cells. It's released into the bloodstream when muscle tissue is damaged, making it a marker used to help evaluate muscle diseases like polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and muscular dystrophy, especially in cases where creatine kinase results are unclear or need confirmation. Elevated aldolase can also occur with liver disease, certain cancers, or after significant muscle injury from trauma or intense exercise. Because it isn't specific to any single condition, an abnormal result is usually followed up with more targeted muscle or liver testing.
