Vitamin B1 details

Description

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is essential for converting food into energy and supporting normal nerve function. Deficiency is relatively uncommon in people eating a varied diet but is a significant concern in certain situations, most notably with heavy alcohol use (which impairs thiamine absorption and is the most common cause of clinically significant deficiency in many countries), severe malnutrition, or after certain bariatric surgeries. Significant deficiency can cause serious, sometimes reversible but potentially permanent neurological problems, including a specific condition called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which is why thiamine testing or empiric treatment is prioritized in at-risk situations.
